Register for the winter 2022 FreedomSchool Spelling Bee Club in Honour of JodyAnn Maxwell and Zala Avant Garde!  This club will happen virtually due to ongoing concerns associated with COVID19. Register here!

This program for Black children aged 6-12 will focus on strengthening spelling skills through phonics, syllabification, word origin knowledge and kinesthetic learning (skipping and dribbling).  After 4 monthly sessions, this club will conclude with a Black Liberation Spelling Bell online where children will compete for trophies and “Black Genius” prize T-shirts.

Fall 2021 Bizarre Program

This collaborative program between Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance, Kimora Amour a.k.a Juju Monroe and FreedomSchool was an opportunity for children 6-12 to learn about the ballroom category: “BIZARRE”.  Children learned about ballroom arts as a form of Black, LGBTQ resistance.  They also learned to embrace being “weird” as a form of revolutionary, self-love.

Each year November 20 marks Transgender Day of Remembrance which acknowledges ongoing murder and violence towards transgender people around the world.  In 2021, for Trans Day of Remembrance we chose to celebrate our Black trans and non-binary children and youth by “giving them their flowers while they are here” [Cecilia Gentili]. This event was marked by a dinner, community-based spa and literal flowers for our little ones.
