FreedomSchool is active in conducting research on Black Liberatory Education. In 2020, FreedomSchool’s co-director, LeRoi Newbold, completed a study on the tenets of Black Liberatory Education in Ontario. These tenets, used to guide FreedomSchool’s practice, are as follows
- Centering Black histories of resistance
- Intersectionality
- Transformative Justice
- Arts Based Pedagogy
- Land Based Learning
- Spirituality
- Disabilities Justice.
Currently, FreedomSchool is working collaboratively with Dr. Janelle Joseph to explore Black Movement Based Art as a key tenet of Black Liberatory Education. In particular, we are studying vogue, dancehall, capoeira and self-defense in relation to Black liberation and education.
